There are a few people on each team who aren't on the Battleship Discord much or at all. There are others who find the strategy part of the game challenging or uninteresting. Here's how to participate even if you're not strategizing with your team.

Find your team

Check the post of 2024 team assignments to learn which team you're on.

Get in touch with your team captain

Email battleshipexchange@gmail.com to get the Discord handle of your team captain. You can chat with them in DMs if you want to learn how your team is strategizing or have other questions. You can also ask questions via email, and your team captain will answer as time permits.

Follow your team's updates on Dreamwidth

As each team progresses through the game, updates will be posted on that team's tag, so you can focus just on your team's tag to see what's happening with your team. For example, if you're on Team Volcano, go to https://battleshipex.dreamwidth.org/tag/volcano for your team's updates and ignore the rest.

Create works

Using the links in your most recent team post, search requests and prompts for something that inspires you, and create for it! If you like, you can ask your team captain for information about what your team's top targets are, or you can just make things you want to make.

Each work needs to be gifted to the person who posted the request and match the request on fandom, medium, at least one relationship, and at least one freeform tag.

When you're ready to post your work, check Dreamwidth to see what stage your team is in. The most recent post will tell you whether you're attacking a board or a boss.

If you're attacking a board, you'll need to claim tags that appear on the board and are appropriate for the content of your work. Click the link that says "Grid and list of goals" in the most recent post to see the board grid and the tags that appear on it. Select one or more needed tags and put them in your author's note to claim them. You can claim up to 1 tag per 100 words of fic or podfic. For art, you can claim as many tags as reasonably appear in the work.

If you're attacking a boss, you'll automatically get points based on wordcount if you post fic or podfic; if you post art, use the information in the most recent post to calculate how many points your art will earn. The absolute simplest way to play Battleship is to save your works until your team is in a boss round and post them then. Whether your work is short or long, and no matter how it's tagged, it will help your team to defeat the boss.

There is a cap of 7 works per person per board and 5 works per person per boss.

Once your author's note is updated with your tag or point claims, post the work to your team collection. Then move on to making something new.

When the game is over

If your team won, congratulations! If not, congratulations anyway—you made stuff and it will make someone happy! Plus you almost certainly got at least one gift, and there's the whole collection to look through as well. No matter how you participated, you get to enjoy the bounty of fic, podfic, and art at the end of the game and feel good about what you made.
